about the project
the extra room is a Berlin-based English language print (maga)zine born of late night walks and Berlin's Landwehrkanal. Or to tweak that equation, it was c-sectioned at the crux of creativity and collaboration. The bastard fruit of the union of two minds, those of editors Mara Goldwyn and Adam Collingsworth, the project came to life in the summer of 2007.
The first issue explores issues of micro-power: power struggles on an individual, personal level. We asked writers in Berlin to respond to this idea through the media of poetry, fiction or nonfiction, and to not get caught up in geopolitics. The results were unpredictable, somewhere between: obvious, insightful, fun, brilliant and sick.
the extra room was also conceived as a tongue-in-cheek "meta-project", in which the editors, Adam and Mara, would examine their own power struggles as they learned to work with each other for the first time.
The (maga)zine will be a semi-annual addition to the Berlin literary landscape for a total of 7 issues. The themes of upcoming issues and guidelines for submissions will be revealed with each subsequent release.
